IPM or integrated pest management is a key element of achieving A Lighter Touch’s goal of supporting growers to move from agrichemical reliance to an agroecological approach to crop protection – sustainable farming that works with nature.
In this series of educative videos Australian IPM specialist Dr Paul Horne explains the general principles of IPM and how it can be applied in any crop. The six-minute videos provide an understanding of the three components of IPM, the importance of crop monitoring, the role IPM plays in resistance management, and an introduction to implementing IPM.
As Paul explains, IPM can be used in any crop, but how it is implemented can look very different depending on the crop type. Many sectors have developed detailed resources to support those wanting to move to an integrated pest management system, such as these guidelines for vegetable crops produced by the Vegetable Research and Innovation Board.
Growers wanting to start implementing IPM should talk to their industry body for guidance specific to their sector.
