Benefits of
A Lighter Touch

The economic benefits to New Zealand resulting from this programme are estimated to be between $546 million and $1,528 million per annum by 2027 – NZIER, 2020.

Progress to meeting
these benefits will be
measured through a
series of performance
indicators:

Export value increase – Over the life of the programme, export value for the crops in the programme to increase by 40%.
Price premium – New Zealand produce will be achieving a premium in primary markets compared to “conventionally” produced products from other countries.
Demand premium – New Zealand will be a preferred supplier of plant-based products as demonstrated through the expanding scope of export markets and export crops through the life of the programme.
Brand NZ recognition increase – Over the life of the programme, Brand NZ recognition for New Zealand produce increases by 40%.
Market access barriers avoided – By the end of the programme there will be no non-tariff barriers preventing market access.

There are also spin-off
benefits to the wider
New Zealand community,
including environmental
and reputational
benefits:

Increasing investment in the horticulture, arable and wine sectors.
Increasing the value of New Zealand’s horticultural, arable and wine exports.
Introducing new technology and management know-how into New Zealand’s economy.
Maintaining the social licence to farm for New Zealand horticulture and arable cropping.

Industry’s additional benefits include improved industry cohesion, shared problem solving, cooperation, closer ties between industry, and research and crop protection communities, and avoiding the consequences of not adapting to meet changing consumer demands. Failure to adapt could result in New Zealand products being locked out of export markets and adverse consumer reaction.
